Both texts provide grammar and real-life conversational scenarios. A limited number of these books are available to purchase in class. Spanish background is highly recommended.

CANCER: THE EMPEROR of ALL MALADIES: During this term, we will witness a Ken Burns produced story of Cancer. A story of the war which spans centuries and continents. A scientific story, but also a deeply human one of doctors, researchers and especially patients who through courage, suffering, and occasional hubris, pushed the boundaries of knowledge. The film interweaves a sweeping historical narrative with intimate tales of contemporary patients and an investigation into the latest scientific breakthroughs that may have brought us, at long last, to the brink of lasting cures. The film will be serialized to meet the time requirements of for the eight-week term. The course will be facilitated by Joel Sturman.

In this dynamic, 8-week program, Jim guides you through the essential building blocks of compelling fiction: how to develop emotionally resonant characters, structure a plot that grips readers from page one, and updates you on the latest “rules of writing.”

Drawing from his popular series—including the Stephen Moorehouse and Archie Archibald mysteries—he shares behind-the-scenes strategies for pacing, dialogue, and revision that have earned him a loyal readership and critical acclaim. Participants will engage in writing exercises, receive personalized feedback, and leave with a toolkit of techniques that can be applied immediately to their own work.

If you're serious about fiction—and ready to learn the ins and outs of how to publish your works, this is the class that could change everything. Spots are limited, so reserve yours now and take the next bold step in your writing journey.

A couple travel junkies will share experiences on how to save money, stay safe and have the adventure of a lifetime. Each class will focus on a different destination. The Fall 2025 lineup includes:  Venice; the Sweet Smell of Cologne (Germany); Argentina & Brazil; Norway; Provence; Shanghai; Ephesus; and, if it’s Tuesday, this must be… In addition, information will be provided on “Travel Hacks” (photo tips, air tags, home exchanges, mobile passports, google flights, jet lag, car rentals, credit cards, insurance, currency exchange, etc.). SOCIAL HISTORY OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN FROM THE 19TH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT: Join our newest teacher to Thursdays, Lou Covotsos, for this relevant subject. Social feminism of the 19th century transformed into the women’s liberation movement of the mid 20th century. While the suffrage movement and the struggle for civil, property, and marital rights for women will be included briefly, this class will focus LESS on the politics of that struggle and more on the every-day lives of women.

Please note: the topics of abortion, birth control, contraception, and sexuality will be covered extensively and are necessarily explicit.

A GUIDE to FAIRY TALES and FOLKLORE: Join Leslie Johansen for her latest adventure in literature. As children and adults, we interpret the adventures of our daily lives through narratives. Classic narratives give us ways to see ourselves as heroes, tricksters, and maybe even villains; they also give us a way to interpret the foes and obstacles we encounter and to defeat them. The vision for this course is to hear stories and explore their deep themes and questions. Some stories we will experience are: Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella (3 versions), Jack and the Beanstalk, The Emperor’s New Clothes, and Snow White. We will use video, lecture and class discussion.

BEACHSIDE BOOK CLUB:  Joanne Birnberg leads this group and invites new members to join all the veterans for a fascinating hour.  The group has selected the following contemporary books for the fall term:

11/20 - The Lost Wife - Alyson Richman

Participants should bring a smile, a ukulele, a tuner, a pencil, a 1 inch 3 ring binder with paper, and a willingness to learn to play and sing to each class.  All learning materials will be given over the internet by accessing the instructor’s G drive. Participants will give Karen a valid Gmail address on the first day of class to initiate this process.  Participants will print the class material, put it in their binder, and bring the binder to each class.  Participants should be willing to practice at least 30 minutes per day to master the lessons.  Class prerequisites include a valid Gmail address and the ability to print lesson materials.  Gmail addresses are free from Google.com.

HISTORY of the INDIAN SUBCONTINENT continuedGo inside the thrilling History of the Indian Subcontinent, a breathtaking survey of South Asia from its earliest societies along the Indus and Ganges rivers through the modern challenges of the 21st century. Perhaps the most important facet of this history is how diverse the region truly is. Roughly the size of continental Europe, India—along with its neighbors Pakistan and Bangladesh—contains a myriad of ethnic groups, socioeconomic classes, religions, and cultural mores. Its strategic location has also made the subcontinent an important trading center and economic hub. Watch as myriad invaders travel through the Khyber Pass from Afghanistan to set up—or conquer—kingdoms in India. Witness the beginnings of the Mughal empire, who created the gorgeous Peacock Throne and the Taj Mahal. History of the Indian Subcontinent is a must-have course for understanding this powerful region and its profound influence on the rest of the globe. This course is from The Great Courses and is taught by Professor Michael H. Fisher Ph.D of Oberlin College, and facilitated by Fahim (Fred) Ahmed.

THE NATIONAL PARKS II: Join Lee Rosenkranz, CTC (Certified Travel Counselor) as he reviews and shows in depth the Ken Burns PBS series on National Parks and the PBS teaching curriculum plus The Wonders of America’s National Parks from The Great Courses. Participants should bring a smile, their ukulele, a tuner, pencil, a 1 inch 3 ring binder with paper, and a willingness to learn, play and sing to each class.  All learning materials will be given over the internet by accessing the instructor’s G drive.  Participants will give Karen a valid Gmail address on the first day of class to initiate this process.   Participants must print the material, put it in their binder, and bring it to class.  Participants should be willing to practice at least 30 minutes per day to master the lessons.  Class prerequisites include ukulele I (or knowledge of the basic 21 chords, C scale, and strumming) a valid Gmail address and the ability to print lesson materials.  Gmail addresses are free from Google.com.

FRIDAY CLASSES @ ASCENSION LUTHERAN

10:00 AM

MAHJONGG FOR BEGINNERS and INTERMEDIATE PLAYERS:  Mahjongg is a tile-based game that originated in China during the Qing Dynasty.  It is commonly played with four players, and is a game of skill, strategy, calculation and involves a degree of chance. Sally Dunn with the assistance of Beverly Sheffer will host this two-hour class. New players will be given specialized attention to learn the game while the more experienced players will play independently.

INVESTING MEETUP – Join John Yoepp for a lively, interactive deep dive into the markets and the economy. We’ll explore investing and trading strategies, practical tactics, and the theories behind them—plus presentations from fellow members and the occasional foray into the fascinating world of taxes. And yes… there’s a stock-picking contest. Are you ready to prove your market savvy?

NOT JUST A GHOST IN THE MACHINE - Christianity on Trial: We will continue our series of Christianity on Trial with an examination of the Person of the Holy Spirit.

Our lectures will examine Jesus’ farewell and promise of the Spirit’s coming.  We will apply the same intellectual rigor to the Spirit’s arrival and role in ‘Defending the Faith’. Especially important will be our consideration of Holy Scripture and the role of the Holy Spirit in God’s revelation.

We continue our methodology of examining the biblical case for Christianity using rules of evidence.  We will examine Jesus’ promise of the Paraclete, advocate, comforter and guide as well as the mystical arrival on the day of Pentecost. We will take on both the gifts and fruit of the Spirit and look at the 1st century practice of Glossolalia (Tongues).

“Ghost in the Machine” is a useful phrase for our subject. It is not only a 1980’s album by the rock band The Police. It has been used metaphorically in dozens of movies and television shows in the last fifty years. It once represented a psychological critique of the mind’s existence separately alongside the body. Today, it is useful to imagine the Holy Spirit’s indwelling as more than Casper the Friendly Ghost taking up residence in the believer.

Join Pr. Rob Cosmas, B.S. Criminology, J.D., Mdiv. as he prepares a defense for a skeptical world. One might call this “Apologetics 101”.

WHAT DO LAWYERS DO? (law for non-lawyers):

“First, let’s kill all the LAWyers.”  Shakespeare, Henry VI, Part II.

“The United States is a nation of LAWS.” John Adams

“No one is above the LAW.” Sect 1, 14th Amendment, U.S. Constitution

What is “the LAW”?  How is the LAW applied to our everyday lives?  How do the courts—the judicial branch of government—interact with the legislative and executive branches of government?

While these topics might seem dry and way too abstract, they are about as current and relevant as anything in today’s headlines. Every attempt will be made to present the material understandably to the non-lawyer. The answers to the questions above are exactly what first-year law students are supposed to understand.  In fact, the materials used in this course will be exactly those used in the law school curriculum.

This course was also taught to the non-lawyers--administrative staff--of a law firm for them to more fully understand and appreciate their roles in the administration of the legal system. Lou Covotsos, a retired lawyer of 30 years, will guide you through the vagaries of law and lawyering.

BEGINNING LINE DANCING: Join Vicki Little as she, once again, leads us in the fun and exercise that is Line Dancing.  This is a class for both the beginner and the experienced since Vicki introduces something new each week.  One of the joys of Line Dancing is it requires no partner, so come join the fun of this low impact exercise.
